Summer Schools US Operations Manager

  • To organise and be responsible for all operational aspects of the US Summer Schools
  • To assist in the organisation of the UK Summer Schools
  • To undertake the role of Center Manager of one US Summer School

Recruitment & HR

  • Oversee the recruitment process in accordance with LAL policies and procedures, including interviewing, assessing and appointing.
  • Provide training to summer schools seasonal staff in advance of their arrival at the summer school.

Operational Set up & Accreditation

  • Ensure that all operational aspects of the summer schools are effective, efficient, within budget and deliver excellent customer experience and service.
  • Become familiar with and operate the company’s IT systems, primarily Microsoft Office Suite/Office 365 and Infospeed Class.
  • Ensure safeguarding provisions are in place and enforced at all times in line with LAL’s Safeguarding Policy, British Council Accreditation criteria, best practice and complying with all legal obligations.
  • Collaborate with the Head of YL Academics in delivering a comprehensive academic programme.
  • Assist in preparations for the UK Summer Schools.

Venue School Requirements

  • Co-ordinate and liaise with the summer schools venue school providers in a professional manner, on a regular basis.
  • Comply with the extents and limitations of the relevant contracts between LAL and the venue school providers.

Financial Reporting

  • Manage and be responsible for all financial reporting and expenditure, both by the schools and head office.

Summer Operations

  • Provide coherent and consistent support to all summer schools management.
  • Perform the role of Center Manager at one of the US Summer Schools when there are no more than two in the US portfolio.
  • Liaise with Admissions and the Commercial Department, providing swift and accurate responses, ensuring that all complaints are handled to the mutual satisfaction of LAL and the client.
  • To be on-call during the weeks of the summer school.


  • Meet and exceed the promises as set out in LAL’s mission and promotional literature.
  • Comply with LAL’s Policies and Procedures.
  • Dress in a manner commensurate with the roles demanded of the position, in keeping with LAL dress code.
  • Carry out any other duties that may be reasonably assigned by the Head of Summer Schools or other senior management.
  The role will require travel to the US at least twice a year, with a probable stay of at least seven weeks in the summer.

Person Specification



Education, Training and Knowledge

  • A Level Standard or equivalent

Relevant Work Experience

  • Extensive management experience
  • Experience working with young people (under 18s)
  • Managing a department within a residential summer school

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent level of spoken and written English (CEFR C1 minimum, e.g. CAE/IELTS 7-8)
  • High customer service ethic
  • Utmost flexibility
  • Driving licence
  • Negotiation skills
  • Financial acumen and numerate
  • Excellent people-management skills
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Cognisant of UK and US HR legislation
  • In depth knowledge of current UK child protection and safeguarding legislation and procedures
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) 2010 or later
  • Ability to be collaborative and to take own initiative

Physical Requirements

  • Able to meet the requirements of the job

Other Attributes

  • Willingness to work non-standard hours when required to meet the needs of the business, including evening and weekends, especially during the summer months



Education, Training and Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • CELTA, Trinity TESOL or DELTA qualification

Relevant Work Experience

  • 3 years’ experience working with young people in an EFL background
  • Recruitment and/or project management
  • Previous experience in a similar role in the UK or US

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of at least one foreign language (B1 or higher)
  • Good understanding and sensitivity of foreign cultures
